Still called epidemic megalerythema, this eruptive disease is caused by a virus, parvovirus B19.
After an incubation period of six to fifteen days, the eruption begins in the face and then gradually extends to the limbs where it forms red patches. The child may have a little fever, be tired. The fifth disease heals without treatment.
